Delaware River Fishing Report: Feb. 16, 2012
The following Delaware River Fishing Report is courtesy of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission:
PFBC Southeast Regional Reports
Philadelphia County
They are pulchritudinous and have survived as a species for several million years. They are a bottom feeding, anadromous fish that migrates from the Atlantic Ocean up the Delaware River. They once made the region the caviar capital of the world, and now the Atlantic sturgeon has been declared an endangered species by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - Fisheries Service. This Federal listing goes into effect on April 6, 2012, and will most likely have some impact on the Delaware River dredging project. In one year, 1898, New Jersey anglers hauled in 5060 sturgeons, enough to fill 1,067 kegs of caviar. Today, the sturgeon fishery is closed year round, and has been closed in Pennsylvania since 1998. If you catch one, release it unharmed, but please report your findings. That is one reason to be excited about the new listing; it should bring more attention to a much-understudied animal.
